This week, Fall Symposium speakers Kimberley Strassel, Stephen Moore, and Allison Schrager examine questions shaping the American economy—from trade with Canada and job growth to how Americans balance spending and financial security.

Kimberley Strassel ’26

Kimberley Strassel speaks with Cato Institute economist Scott Lincicome about the escalating U.S.-Canada trade dispute. They argue that the high Canadian tariffs drawing attention cover only a small portion of the enormous bilateral trading relationship, much of which has historically moved tariff-free under existing trade agreements. They question whether escalating the dispute is worth the economic disruption it could create.

Stephen Moore ’24 & ’26

Stephen Moore highlights encouraging signs in the latest jobs report, including strong August job growth and upward revisions to the previous month. He points in particular to rising labor-force participation and job growth connected to data-center construction as signs of continued strength in the U.S. economy.

Allison Schrager 25’ & ’26

Allison Schrager examines Americans’ complicated relationship with spending and saving. She argues that the goal of saving isn’t simply delayed gratification, but maintaining a stable standard of living throughout life. With discretionary spending rising, Schrager warns that enjoying prosperity today must be balanced against having enough liquid savings to weather future financial shocks.
